How to Use the Block Calculator
Start with the wall dimensions: measure the full length of each wall and the finished wall height. Add separate walls when the project contains multiple wall sections. Enter the width and height of doors and windows so their areas are removed from the gross wall area rather than counting blocks inside the openings.
Next, enter the concrete masonry unit (CMU) dimensions or choose a block preset. Use the actual block length, block height and block width, such as an 8 × 8 × 16 inch nominal concrete block, and enter the mortar joint thickness used by the project. The calculator uses the block face dimensions and mortar joint to determine the block-course layout and estimated block count.
Enter a waste and breakage allowance to account for cutting, damage and installation losses. Corner blocks, cap or bond-beam courses, blocks per pallet, core-grout fill, vertical reinforcement, bar spacing and stocked bar length can then be included when those materials are part of the wall construction.
For a complete block wall estimate, add mortar bag size, mortar waste, sand per mortar bag, grout supply and optional block, mortar, grout, rebar and labor pricing. The Block Calculator calculates the net wall area after subtracting openings, determines the block face coverage from block length, block height and mortar joint, and applies the selected waste allowance. Additional calculations estimate courses, blocks per course, mortar, grout, reinforcement, pallets and project cost from the quantities and prices entered.

Accurate measurements produce a more useful block wall material estimate. Check the following details before entering quantities into the Block Calculator.
Measure Every Wall Section
Measure each wall separately when a project contains different wall lengths or heights. Use the calculator's multiple-wall option instead of combining dimensions that do not share the same geometry.
Use Actual Opening Sizes
Measure doors and windows by their actual width and height. Common examples include a 3 ft × 6.75 ft door and a 4 ft × 4 ft window, but the project dimensions take priority.
Check Block Dimensions
Confirm the manufacturer's block length, height and width before calculating. Nominal concrete masonry unit dimensions can differ from actual manufactured dimensions because mortar joints are part of the installed wall module.
Choose a Practical Waste Allowance
Waste covers breakage, cutting, damaged units and installation losses. A 3%, 5% or 10% allowance may produce different purchasing quantities, so use the percentage appropriate for the project conditions.
Account for Special Blocks
Corner blocks and cap or bond-beam courses can change the final quantity. Include corners, top-course requirements and bond-beam construction when those units are required by the wall design.
Review Mortar Requirements
Mortar requirements depend on block dimensions, mortar joint thickness, bag yield and waste. Check the product's published yield when purchasing masonry mortar.
Understand Grout and Core Fill
Hollow concrete blocks contain cores that may remain open or receive grout depending on the construction design. The calculator provides core-fill options such as every 4th, every 3rd, every 2nd or all cores.
Verify Reinforcement Requirements
Vertical rebar, horizontal joint reinforcement and bond beams are project-specific construction components. Enter the spacing and reinforcement options that match the wall design rather than assuming a universal spacing requirement.
Check Pallet Quantities
Block suppliers commonly sell units by pallet. Enter the correct blocks-per-pallet quantity because pallet requirements are rounded up to whole pallets.
Use Consistent Units
Keep wall measurements consistent with the selected measurement unit. The calculator supports feet (ft), inches (in), metres (m), centimetres (cm) and yards (yd), while block and mortar dimensions have their own selectable units.
Separate Quantity From Cost
The calculator can provide a quantity-only estimate without pricing. Add block price, mortar price, grout, rebar and labor costs when a material and installation budget is required.
