How to Measure Your Fence
Start by measuring each straight fence run from one end point to the other. Record the length (L) of every run, because separate runs can have different dimensions and quantities. Measure the finished fence height (H) above ground, select the desired post spacing from centre to centre, and choose whether the project uses picket or board fencing, ready-made fence panels, post and rail construction, or chain-link fencing.
For accurate material quantities, enter the board width (W) and gap for individual boards, or the panel or mesh roll width for manufactured sections. For the foundation, enter the post width, hole diameter and hole depth, together with any gravel base. The practical foundation depth depends on fence height, local ground conditions, frost requirements, soil stability, wind exposure and applicable construction requirements, so the calculated quantity is an estimate rather than a site-specific engineering specification.
05 How much concrete do I need for fence posts?
Concrete volume is calculated from the hole area minus the post area, multiplied by the concrete depth and total number of posts. The calculator then converts the volume into the selected concrete-bag yield and rounds the number of bags upward, including a small material allowance.
06 Does the Fence Calculator include gates?
Yes. Enter the number of gates, the width of each gate and the number of extra posts required per gate. Gate openings are deducted from the infill length, while gate posts are added to the total post count.
07 Can I calculate fence paint or stain quantity?
Yes. Select the finish option, enter product coverage, then choose the number of coats and sides. The calculator uses fence face area, coverage, coats and sides to estimate the required gallons. For example, 400 ft² of fence face at 200 ft² per gallon requires 2 gallons for one coat on one side before rounding or additional coats are considered.
