Wall Area

Wall Area = 2 × (L + W) × H × Quantity

L is length, W is width, H is wall height, and Quantity represents rooms or repeated sections with the same dimensions.

Ceiling Area

Ceiling Area = L × W × Quantity

Ceiling coverage uses the floor-plan dimensions and is included when the ceiling surface is selected.

Door & Window Deductions

Opening Area = Door Count × Door W × Door H + Window Count × Window W × Window H

Door and window openings are deducted from wall area when walls are selected for priming.

Trim Area = Perimeter × Trim Band Height

Selected trim and skirting are calculated from the room perimeter and the specified trim band height.

Net Primeable Area

Net Area = Wall Area − Openings + Ceiling Area + Trim Area

Priming Plan

Primed Area = Net Area × Priming Scope

A full-surface plan uses 100%, while partial plans can use 50%, 30%, or 15% of the calculated surface.

Area Over All Coats

Total Coat Area = Primed Area × Number of Coats

Two coats require twice the coating area of one coat, while three coats require three times the coating area.

Effective Coverage

Effective Rate = Base Rate × (1 − Porosity − Application Loss) × (1 + Thinning)

Surface porosity and application method reduce effective coverage, while first-coat thinning increases the calculated effective coverage according to the selected adjustment.

Primer Quantity

Primer Volume = (Total Coat Area ÷ Effective Coverage Rate) × (1 + Spare Allowance)

The calculator converts the result between square feet per gallon and square metres per litre so the calculation remains consistent when you switch between imperial and metric coverage units.

Helpful Information Before Using the Primer Calculator

Measure the Room Correctly

  1. Measure the length from one wall to the opposite wall.
  2. Measure the width across the room.
  3. Measure the wall height from the finished floor to the ceiling.
  4. Record the quantity of rooms or repeated sections with identical dimensions.

Choose the Correct Surface

Select only the surfaces that require primer. The calculator can separately account for walls, ceilings, trim and skirting, and doors and frames. Selecting additional surfaces increases the primeable area and therefore increases the required primer quantity.

Account for Doors and Windows

Door and window openings reduce the wall area that requires primer. Enter the number of openings and their width and height so the calculator can deduct the opening area from the selected wall surface.

Use the Manufacturer's Coverage Rate

Primer coverage varies by product and substrate. Enter the coverage rate printed on the product label or technical data sheet, such as 400 ft² per gallon or a metric value such as 10 m² per litre.

Consider Surface Porosity

Porous drywall, fresh plaster, masonry, concrete, bare wood, and other absorbent surfaces can consume more primer than smooth, sealed surfaces. The calculator applies a selected porosity adjustment to the nominal coverage rate.

Check the Primer Type

  • Use PVA drywall primer for suitable new drywall surfaces.

Do Not Ignore Primer Coats

One coat and two coats require different quantities. A two-coat application approximately doubles the coating area before coverage adjustments and spare material are applied. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions for the required number of coats.

Add a Practical Spare Allowance

The calculator can add 5% or 10% spare material to account for touch-ups, minor losses, uneven absorption, and application waste. A spare allowance does not replace proper surface preparation or manufacturer instructions.
