The Primer Calculator determines how much primer you need by converting your measurements into the total surface area that requires priming. For room dimensions, enter the length (L), width (W), and wall height (H) using feet, inches, metres, centimetres, or yards. Wall area is calculated from the room perimeter multiplied by wall height, while ceiling area uses length multiplied by width.
Select walls, ceiling, trim and skirting, or doors and frames according to the surfaces you intend to prime. Door and window openings can be deducted from wall area, which gives a more practical estimate of the actual paintable and primeable surface. You can enter multiple rooms or sections when the project contains different dimensions.
You can use the surface area input instead of room dimensions when the total area is already known. The calculator accepts square feet (ft²), square metres (m²), and square yards (yd²), making the tool useful for drywall primer, plaster primer, wood primer, MDF primer, masonry primer, bonding primer, stain-blocking primer, shellac-based sealer, and metal primer calculations.
Your selected substrate condition influences the recommended primer, coverage rate, porosity adjustment, application loss, and recoat window. How the Primer Calculator Works
The calculator converts your room dimensions or known surface area into the amount of primer required for the selected surfaces and coating plan.
Enter the measurements, select the substrate and primer, set the coverage rate and coats, then apply the relevant porosity, application-loss, thinning, and spare-material adjustments. The calculator converts the final area into litres and gallons, rounds the required quantity to the selected container size, and calculates optional material, labour, preparation, and project costs.
Primer Calculator Formula
The Primer Calculator uses several connected formulas because primer quantity depends on surface area, openings, coverage, coats, substrate condition, application method, and material allowance.
Wall Area
L is length, W is width, H is wall height, and Quantity represents rooms or repeated sections with the same dimensions.
Ceiling Area
Ceiling coverage uses the floor-plan dimensions and is included when the ceiling surface is selected.
Door & Window Deductions
Door and window openings are deducted from wall area when walls are selected for priming.
Trim & Skirting
Selected trim and skirting are calculated from the room perimeter and the specified trim band height.
Net Primeable Area
Only the surfaces selected for priming contribute to the final primeable surface area.
Priming Plan
A full-surface plan uses 100%, while partial plans can use 50%, 30%, or 15% of the calculated surface.
Area Over All Coats
Two coats require twice the coating area of one coat, while three coats require three times the coating area.
Effective Coverage
Surface porosity and application method reduce effective coverage, while first-coat thinning increases the calculated effective coverage according to the selected adjustment.
Primer Quantity
The calculator converts the result between square feet per gallon and square metres per litre so the calculation remains consistent when you switch between imperial and metric coverage units.

Helpful Information Before Using the Primer Calculator
Accurate measurements and realistic coating assumptions produce a more useful primer quantity estimate.
Measure the Room Correctly
- Measure the length from one wall to the opposite wall.
- Measure the width across the room.
- Measure the wall height from the finished floor to the ceiling.
- Record the quantity of rooms or repeated sections with identical dimensions.
Choose the Correct Surface
Select only the surfaces that require primer. The calculator can separately account for walls, ceilings, trim and skirting, and doors and frames. Selecting additional surfaces increases the primeable area and therefore increases the required primer quantity.
Account for Doors and Windows
Door and window openings reduce the wall area that requires primer. Enter the number of openings and their width and height so the calculator can deduct the opening area from the selected wall surface.
Use the Manufacturer's Coverage Rate
Primer coverage varies by product and substrate. Enter the coverage rate printed on the product label or technical data sheet, such as 400 ft² per gallon or a metric value such as 10 m² per litre.
Consider Surface Porosity
Porous drywall, fresh plaster, masonry, concrete, bare wood, and other absorbent surfaces can consume more primer than smooth, sealed surfaces. The calculator applies a selected porosity adjustment to the nominal coverage rate.
Check the Primer Type
- Use PVA drywall primer for suitable new drywall surfaces.
- Use acrylic or multi-surface primer for appropriate plaster and general surfaces.
- Use wood primer for suitable bare or sanded wood.
- Use bonding primer for difficult glossy or previously coated surfaces.
- Use stain-blocking primer for suitable water stains and discoloration.
- Use masonry sealer or block filler for appropriate masonry substrates.
- Use metal primer for suitable bare or rusted metal.
Do Not Ignore Primer Coats
One coat and two coats require different quantities. A two-coat application approximately doubles the coating area before coverage adjustments and spare material are applied. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions for the required number of coats.
Add a Practical Spare Allowance
The calculator can add 5% or 10% spare material to account for touch-ups, minor losses, uneven absorption, and application waste. A spare allowance does not replace proper surface preparation or manufacturer instructions.
Understand Container Quantities
Primer is commonly sold in different container sizes, including quarts, gallons, litres, and larger pails. The calculator converts the required volume into the selected container size and rounds up to a whole container for purchasing.
Metric and Imperial Measurements
The calculator supports feet (ft), inches (in), metres (m), centimetres (cm), and yards (yd) for room dimensions. Surface-area mode supports square feet (ft²), square metres (m²), and square yards (yd²).
Primer Cost Is an Estimate
