Square Footage Calculator Formula
The formula depends on the shape being measured. Use the dimensions shown in the calculator because each geometric area formula uses a specific combination of length, width, height, radius, diameter, base, or axis measurements.
Rectangle
A rectangular room measuring 12 ft × 15 ft has an area of 180 sq ft.
Square
A square with four equal sides of 10 ft has an area of 100 sq ft.
Triangle
A triangle with a 12 ft base and 8 ft perpendicular height has an area of 48 sq ft.
Circle
The calculator uses the entered diameter to determine the radius as diameter ÷ 2.
Trapezoid
A trapezoid uses both parallel sides and the perpendicular distance between the two bases.
L-Shape
The missing rectangular section is subtracted from the overall rectangular area.
Semicircle
The calculator uses the diameter to determine the radius before calculating half of a circle’s area.
Ellipse
A and B represent half of the major and minor axes respectively.

Measurement Tips
- Measure length and width using the same unit, such as feet and feet or meters and meters.
- Record actual dimensions before rounding measurements.
- Use the horizontal dimension as length and the vertical dimension as width for a standard rectangular surface.
- Measure diameter straight across the center when calculating circles and semicircles.
Waste and Extra Material
- Add a waste percentage when material must be cut, trimmed, fitted, or replaced.
- A 10% allowance changes 180 sq ft of base area to 198 sq ft of material coverage.
- Increase the allowance for complex layouts, numerous corners, diagonal patterns, or extensive cutting.
- Treat waste as a material allowance rather than usable finished floor area.
