Turf Calculator: Calculate Turf Rolls, Coverage & Cost

Quick Answer

Enter your lawn length and width, choose the measurement unit, add any areas that need to be deducted, then allow for cutting waste to calculate the turf area, rolls or slabs, pallets, weight, ground preparation materials, watering requirement, and estimated cost. The Turf Calculator uses the net lawn area after deductions, applies your selected waste percentage, and then divides the required coverage by the area of each turf roll, sod roll, or turf slab. For accurate lawn measurements, measure each rectangular area as length × width, use diameter for a circular area, and use base × height ÷ 2 for a triangular area; add separate areas for irregular lawns and switch paths, patios, planting beds, ponds, or other spaces to “Deduct” when those areas should not receive turf.

The Turf Calculator helps estimate the amount of artificial or natural turf, sod, lawn turf, turf rolls, turf slabs, and pallets required for a new lawn installation. Start with the actual lawn dimensions in metres (m), centimetres (cm), feet (ft), inches (in), or yards (yd), then enter the turf piece length and width, pallet quantity, and turf weight where required. The calculator can account for cutting waste, curved boundaries, obstacles, deducted areas, turf laying direction, staggered joints, topsoil depth, pre-turf fertilizer, first watering, old turf removal, delivery, installation labour, disposal, turf cutter hire, and other project costs. The result gives you a practical turf coverage estimate in square metres (m²), square feet (ft²), and square yards (yd²), together with the number of rolls or slabs and pallets needed for ordering.

Calculation Method

How the Turf Calculator Works

The Turf Calculator first calculates the total lawn area from the measurements you enter, then subtracts paths, patios, beds, ponds, or other areas marked for deduction. The calculator applies the selected cutting waste percentage, divides the required turf coverage by the coverage of each roll or slab, and rounds the result up to whole pieces and pallets.

The calculation can then extend beyond turf quantity to estimate turf weight, topsoil volume, fertilizer bags, first watering, old turf removal, delivery, laying labour, disposal, and the total project cost when prices are entered.

Calculation Formula

Turf Calculator Formula

The Turf Calculator uses the following formulas to turn lawn measurements into turf coverage, roll quantity, pallet quantity, preparation materials, and cost estimates.

01 Lawn Area
Area = Length × Width

Use the same measurement unit for length and width. For example, a 30 ft × 20 ft rectangular lawn has an area of 600 ft².

02 Circular Area
Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²

Select Circle when the lawn or section is circular and enter the diameter across the widest point.

03 Triangular Area
Area = 0.5 × Base × Height

Use the triangle option for a triangular section and enter the base and perpendicular height.

04 Net Lawn Area
Net Area = Added Areas − Deducted Areas

Areas marked as Add increase the turf requirement, while areas marked as Deduct reduce the turf requirement.

05 Cutting Waste
Order Area = Net Area × (1 + Waste ÷ 100)

A 5% cutting waste allowance increases the turf area ordered by 5% to account for trimming, cuts, seams, and installation waste.

06 Turf Pieces
Piece Area = Piece Length × Piece Width

The required number of rolls or slabs is rounded up so the calculated order does not fall below the required turf coverage.

07 Pallets
Pallets = Ceiling(Pieces ÷ Pieces per Pallet)

Whole pallets are required when turf is supplied by pallet, so partial pallet requirements are rounded up.

08 Turf Weight
Weight = Order Area × Weight Rate

Metric weight uses kg/m², while imperial weight can use lb/ft². The result is displayed in both kilograms (kg) and pounds (lb).

09 Topsoil Volume
Soil Volume = Net Area × Topsoil Depth

Topsoil depth is converted into metres before calculating cubic volume, with the result displayed in cubic metres (m³), cubic yards (yd³), and cubic feet (ft³).

10 First Watering
Water = Net Area × Watering Depth

The selected soak depth is applied to the net lawn area to estimate the first watering requirement in litres (L) and US gallons (gal).

11 Fertilizer
Fertilizer = Area × Spread Rate

The fertilizer quantity uses the selected spread rate and bag size to estimate the total fertilizer mass and number of bags.

12 Turf Cost
Total = Turf + Delivery + Preparation + Labour

When prices are entered, the calculator combines turf, delivery, topsoil, feed, laying, removal, hire, disposal, and extra costs into an estimated project total.

Worked Example

Turf Calculator Example

Consider a rectangular lawn that measures 30 ft long by 20 ft wide. The project includes a 10 ft × 5 ft patio that will be deducted, uses 5% cutting waste, and installs standard turf rolls measuring 1.64 m × 0.61 m.

Example Lawn Project

A complete example using the same measurement types and calculation fields available in the Turf Calculator.
Measurement Unit Feet (ft)
Lawn Length 30 ft
Lawn Width 20 ft
Main Lawn Area 600 ft²
Deducted Area 10 ft × 5 ft = 50 ft²
Net Lawn Area 550 ft²
Cutting Waste 5%
Order Area 577.5 ft²
Order Area Metric 53.65 m²
Turf Type Standard roll
Roll Length 1.64 m
Roll Width 0.61 m
Roll Coverage 1.0004 m²
Pallet Quantity 50 rolls
Turf Weight Rate 18 kg/m²
Topsoil Depth 25 mm
Fertilizer Rate 35 g/m²
Fertilizer Bag 20 kg
First Watering 25 mm
Old Turf Removal 40 mm strip depth
Lay Direction Rows along width
Joint Pattern Brick bond
Calculated Turf Requirement 54 rolls · approximately 53.65 m²
54 rolls provide approximately 54.02 m² of physical roll coverage, which is enough to cover the 53.65 m² order area after the 5% cutting-waste allowance. The result rounds up to 2 pallets when each pallet contains 50 rolls.

Helpful Information for Using the Turf Calculator

01 Measure the Lawn Accurately

Measure the longest usable length and the widest usable width for a simple rectangular lawn. Record measurements in feet, metres, centimetres, inches, or yards and keep the selected measurement unit consistent within each area.

  • Measure length from one usable edge to the opposite edge.
  • Measure width across the lawn at the relevant section.
  • Split irregular lawns into smaller measurable areas.

02 Deduct Non-Turf Areas

Do not include areas that will remain as hardscape or planting space. Add a separate row and switch the row to “Deduct” for areas such as patios, paths, flower beds, trees, ponds, sheds, or other permanent obstacles.

  • Deduct rectangular patios using length × width.
  • Deduct circular features using diameter.
  • Deduct triangular sections using base × height ÷ 2.

03 Allow for Cutting Waste

Turf rarely fits every boundary without cutting. A waste allowance covers trimming around borders, curves, corners, trees, beds, paths, and other obstacles.

  • Use 5% for a relatively simple lawn.
  • Use around 10% for lawns with curves or moderate cutting.
  • Use 15% or more for intricate borders and numerous obstacles.

04 Check Your Turf Roll Size

Turf suppliers sell products in different roll, sod, and slab dimensions. The piece length and piece width determine the coverage of each individual piece and directly affect the number of pieces required.

  • Check the supplier's actual roll dimensions.
  • Check whether the product is sold as rolls or slabs.
  • Check how many pieces are loaded on each pallet.

05 Understand Pallet Quantities

Pallet quantities depend on the turf product. A standard roll may have a different pallet count from a large roll, sod slab, or specialist turf product.

  • Enter the supplier's pieces-per-pallet quantity.
  • Expect partial pallet requirements to round up.
  • Confirm pallet dimensions and delivery restrictions with the supplier.

06 Consider Turf Weight

Fresh turf can be heavy because the product may contain moisture and attached soil. The calculator estimates delivered turf weight from the selected weight rate, but actual supplier weight can vary with turf type, moisture content, soil thickness, and handling conditions.

  • Use kg/m² for metric weight information.
  • Use lb/ft² for imperial weight information.
  • Check vehicle access and unloading requirements for large orders.

07 Calculate Topsoil Volume

Select the topsoil option when a new soil bed is required before turf installation. Enter the intended soil depth in millimetres, centimetres, or inches.

  • 25 mm equals 2.5 cm of topsoil depth.
  • 50 mm equals 5 cm of topsoil depth.
  • Greater depths require proportionally more soil volume.

08 Include Preparation and Installation Costs

The cost estimate can include turf, delivery, topsoil, fertilizer, laying labour, old turf removal, turf cutter hire, skip or disposal charges, and sand or dressing. Leave price fields blank when only a quantity estimate is required.

  • Enter turf prices using the supplier's pricing unit.
  • Enter laying costs per square foot when applicable.
  • Use current supplier or contractor quotations for purchasing decisions.

09 Measure Irregular Lawns in Sections

A lawn with several corners, curves, narrow sections, or obstacles is easier to estimate by dividing the space into measurable shapes. Use multiple calculator rows, add each turf-covered section, and deduct areas that will not receive turf. The calculator combines those rows into a single net lawn area before applying the cutting-waste allowance.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About the Turf Calculator

How do I calculate how much turf I need?

Calculate the lawn's net area first, then add a cutting-waste allowance and divide the resulting order area by the coverage of one turf roll or slab. For example, a 600 ft² lawn with a 50 ft² deduction has 550 ft² of net turf area; adding 5% waste produces 577.5 ft² of required coverage before converting that requirement into individual turf pieces.

What measurements do I need for a Turf Calculator?

You need the lawn length and width for a rectangular area, diameter for a circular area, or base and height for a triangular area. The calculator can use metres (m), centimetres (cm), feet (ft), inches (in), or yards (yd), while turf piece dimensions can be entered separately in metres, centimetres, feet, or inches.

How much turf waste should I allow?

A 5% waste allowance is a practical starting point for a simple lawn. Use around 10% when the lawn has curves or several cutting points, and consider 15% or more when the garden has intricate borders, narrow sections, trees, paths, planting beds, or numerous obstacles. The appropriate allowance depends on the lawn layout and installation method.

Does the Turf Calculator deduct patios, paths, and flower beds?

Yes. Add the non-turf section as a separate area and switch the row from “Add area” to “Deduct area.” The calculator subtracts the selected rectangle, circle, or triangle from the total turf-covered area before calculating cutting waste and turf quantity.

How many turf rolls do I need for 100 square metres?

The exact number depends on the coverage of one roll and the waste allowance. For example, a roll measuring 1.64 m × 0.61 m covers approximately 1.0004 m², so 100 m² of net lawn with 5% waste requires 105 m² of turf coverage and approximately 105 rolls of that particular roll size. Different turf products can produce different piece counts.

How do I calculate turf rolls per pallet?

Enter the number of turf pieces supplied on one pallet. The calculator divides the required roll or slab quantity by the pieces-per-pallet figure and rounds the result up to a whole pallet. For example, 54 rolls with 50 rolls per pallet require 2 pallets.

Can the Turf Calculator estimate topsoil for a new lawn?

Yes. Select “Include topsoil,” enter the required topsoil depth, and choose millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), or inches (in). The calculator estimates the required soil volume in cubic metres (m³), cubic yards (yd³), and cubic feet (ft³) using the net turf area.

Can I calculate turf cost as well as turf quantity?

Yes. The calculator can estimate turf cost using a price per m², ft², yd², roll, or pallet. Delivery, laying labour, topsoil, fertilizer, old turf removal, turf cutter hire, skip or disposal charges, and other extras can be added to produce an estimated total project cost.

Can I use different shapes for an irregular lawn?

Yes. Create separate rows for rectangular, circular, and triangular sections. Add the areas that require turf and switch any paths, patios, ponds, beds, or other non-turf sections to “Deduct area.” The calculator combines the individual measurements into a net lawn area.

Does turf weight depend on moisture?

Yes. Actual turf weight can vary with moisture content, soil attached to the turf, turf variety, cutting thickness, and supplier specifications. The calculator provides an estimate based on the weight rate you enter, so supplier-provided weight information is preferable for transport and delivery planning.
