Tile Calculator for Floors,
Walls & Tile Quantity

Quick Answer

Enter the area dimensions, tile dimensions, grout joint, and wastage allowance to calculate the tile area, number of tiles, boxes to order, and optional estimated cost. For a floor, use Length × Width; for a wall or backsplash, use Width × Height and deduct doors, windows, or other openings when required. The calculator converts feet (ft), inches (in), metres (m), centimetres (cm), and yards (yd), then adds the selected tile wastage allowance before determining the quantity to buy.

How to Measure for a Tile Calculator

Measure the surface you want to cover before entering the numbers. For a floor tile calculation, measure the room from front wall to back wall for the length and from left wall to right wall for the width. For a wall tile calculation, measure the wall horizontally for the width and vertically from the floor to the required tiling height. The calculator uses these measurements to determine the total tiling area.

Measure the tile length and tile width separately from the product packaging or tile specification. Tile dimensions may be listed in millimetres, centimetres, inches, or feet, so the calculator lets you select the appropriate tile unit. Enter the grout joint as well because the spacing between tiles affects the tile module used for the quantity estimate.

For irregular rooms or surfaces, enter separate rectangular areas and add them together. Wall projects can include deductions for doors, windows, niches, or other openings so the net tiling area is more useful for estimating tile requirements. A wastage allowance accounts for cuts, breakage, offcuts, pattern requirements, and future replacement tiles.

L
Length Floor depth from front wall to back wall.
W
Width Horizontal measurement from left to right.
H

How the Tile Calculator Works

Enter the surface, dimensions, tile details, wastage and optional pricing.

The Tile Calculator converts your measurements into a net tiling area, tile quantity, estimated boxes and optional material or installation cost. Floor calculations use Length × Width, while wall and backsplash calculations use Width × Height; openings such as doors and windows can be deducted before tile quantity is calculated.

The calculator then uses the selected tile length, tile width and grout joint to determine tile coverage, adds the chosen wastage allowance for cuts and breakage, and rounds the purchasing quantity up to whole tiles or boxes.

01

Measure the Surface

Enter floor length and width, or wall width and height.

02

Enter Tile Size

Add tile length, tile width, unit and grout joint.

03

Add Wastage

Select or enter an allowance for cuts, breakage and pattern waste.

04

Check the Result

Review area, tile quantity, boxes and optional dollar cost.

Tile Calculator Formula

The calculation uses area, tile coverage, grout spacing and wastage.

The basic tile quantity calculation starts with the surface area. The calculator converts the selected measurement units into a common internal unit, subtracts optional openings, calculates the effective tile module including the grout joint, applies wastage, and rounds the purchasing quantity upward.

Floor area
Area = Length × Width
Use the floor length from front to back and floor width from left to right.
Wall area
Area = Width × Height
Use the horizontal wall width and the vertical height being tiled.
Net tiling area
Net Area = Gross Area − Deductions
Door, window and fixture deductions reduce the surface area that needs tile.
Tile module
Module = (L + G) × (W + G)
L is tile length, W is tile width and G is the grout joint converted to the same unit.
Tiles required
Tiles = Net Area ÷ Module Area
The result is rounded up because partial tiles cannot be purchased as a normal whole-tile quantity.
Tiles to buy
Buy = Tiles × (1 + Wastage ÷ 100)
The calculator rounds the final purchasing quantity upward after applying the selected wastage percentage.

Tile Calculator Example

A practical floor tile quantity example using every major measurement.

Example: 12 ft × 15 ft floor with 600 × 600 mm tiles
Sample Calculation
Surface Floor
Length 15 ft
Width 12 ft
Tile Length 600 mm
Tile Width 600 mm
Grout Joint 3 mm
Pattern Straight / Grid
Wastage 10%
Tile Price $3.50 / ft²
Example Result
Floor area 180 ft²
Area with 10% waste 198 ft²
Tile coverage ≈ 3.88 ft²
Tiles to buy ≈ 52 tiles

This example shows the measurement sequence: calculate the 180 ft² floor area, allow 10% additional material for cuts and wastage, determine the coverage of each 600 × 600 mm tile with the selected grout joint, and round the purchasing quantity upward. The final quantity can change with the exact tile dimensions, grout spacing, laying pattern, room shape and supplier packaging.

Helpful Information Before Calculating Tile

Use accurate measurements and confirm product specifications before ordering.

Measure These 6 Items

  1. Measure the floor length and width for floor tile projects.
  2. Measure the wall width and height for wall tile or backsplash projects.
  3. Measure each separate rectangular section when the surface is not one simple rectangle.
  4. Measure each door, window, niche or fixture that should be excluded from a wall area.
  5. Check the manufacturer's actual tile length and tile width before entering tile dimensions.
  6. Record the specified grout joint when the tile layout requires spacing between tiles.

Choose the Right Wastage

  • Use a lower allowance for a simple straight or grid layout with minimal cutting.
  • Use around 10% for a common straightforward tile installation estimate.
  • Increase the allowance for diagonal layouts, offset patterns, herringbone, chevron and surfaces with numerous cuts.
  • Allow additional material when tiles are fragile, difficult to replace or being installed around complex features.

Tile Units & Area Units

  • Enter surface dimensions in feet (ft), inches (in), metres (m), centimetres (cm) or yards (yd).
  • Enter tile dimensions in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), inches (in) or feet (ft).
  • Compare area in square feet (ft²), square metres (m²) or square yards (yd²).
  • Keep length and width in the same unit when manually checking an area calculation.

Tile Boxes & Pricing

  • Check how many tiles are included in each box before calculating the number of boxes.
  • Check the supplier's stated coverage per box because packaging can differ between tile products.
  • Enter pricing per ft², m², yd², tile or box according to the supplier's pricing method.
  • Use the optional adhesive, grout and installation fields when you want a broader project estimate.
  • Treat the dollar result as an estimate and confirm current supplier pricing, packaging and availability before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common tile quantity, measurement and cost questions.

01

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Multiply the surface length by width for a floor, or width by height for a wall, to find the area. Divide the net tiling area by the coverage of one tile, apply an appropriate wastage allowance, and round the result up to the next whole tile or box.

02

What measurements do I need for a floor tile calculation?

You need the floor length and floor width, plus the tile length, tile width, grout joint and wastage percentage. The calculator accepts feet, inches, metres, centimetres and yards for surface dimensions.

03

Which side is length, width and height?

For a floor, length runs from the front wall to the back wall and width runs from the left wall to the right wall. For a wall, width is the horizontal measurement and height is the vertical measurement from the floor to the top of the tiled area.

04

Should I include a tile wastage allowance?

Yes. A wastage allowance accounts for cuts, breakage, damaged pieces, pattern requirements and unusable offcuts. A straightforward layout commonly starts around 10%, while diagonal, herringbone, chevron and complex layouts can require a higher allowance.

05

Does grout spacing affect the tile quantity?

Yes. The calculator includes the grout joint when determining the tile module used for the quantity estimate. Enter the grout width in millimetres or inches according to the joint specified for the tile installation.

06

Can I calculate wall tiles for a bathroom or backsplash?

Yes. Select the wall option and enter the wall width and height. You can add doors, windows, fixtures or other openings as deductions so the calculator determines the net wall area requiring tile.

07

Can this Tile Calculator calculate boxes?

Yes. Enter the number of tiles per box and the calculator rounds the tile quantity up to the required number of complete boxes. Check the actual manufacturer's packaging because tile coverage and pieces per box vary between products.

08

Can I estimate the cost of my tile project?

Yes. The calculator supports tile pricing per square foot, square metre, square yard, tile or box, with optional adhesive and grout and installation costs. Enter current supplier or installer rates to produce a dollar estimate; the displayed cost is not a fixed retail quote.
